George “Speed” Reid joined the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada in January 1942. This is his first-hand account of the invasions of Sicily and Italy. It is also the unforgettable story of his time in eight Nazi POW camps. George escaped with six others and returned to Canada where he worked as a firefighter.

Review

A spare, vivid, compelling account of one young soldier’s journey through war and captivity during World War II. I enjoyed it very much. –Mark Zuehlke, author of Ortona and Juno Beach

George Reid’s memoir is the story of a Canadian soldier in World War II. It follows Reid’s journey as a scout and Bren gunner in the Seaforth Highlanders from the beach at Pachino, through Sicily and up the boot of Italy. This story is fascinating. But what makes Reid’s story unique is the account of his capture by the Germans in October 1943 and his experiences over the next 18 months in various POW camps. This is a fine addition to Canada’s litrature on World War II. –Norm Christie, Author and TV Host of For King & Country.
