Grandpa Carl has been gone for eight years when he makes a phone call to his granddaughter, Savannah, and asks her to come and get him, because he needs to settle things. As Savannah listens to her grandpa’s amazing story, she begins to understand why he left.

He explains how he and his three buddies grew up in rural Iowa in the early 1900s and how their oldest friend, Charlie, was able to see into and plan the future. Charlie convinced Carl, Tom, and John to either make their own plans or accept the plans of someone else, especially those concerning the golden years.

If they outlived their wives, who would take care of them? Would it be a nursing home or another kind of caretaker? As the time for “escape” draws closer, would they be able to go through with it, and how could they get away from family? Would their secret cabin hold their secret golden years until the end? Would their promise to each other endure until their end?
